General Manager - Garside Sands

As a result of an internal promotion we have an exciting opportunity for an aspiring General Manager to lead our Garside Sands business.

About the role

Garside Sands is a producer of a wide range of specialist silica sands and sand/soil blends distributed across the UK and abroad.  The sand is utilised in a range of specialist applications including sports facilities and pitches, water filtration, rail, brick manufacture and other industrial applications.  The position is based at Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

The role of General Manager is accountable for leading and managing the specialist sands business encompassing our quarrying, dredging, drying and packaging operations in addition to the internal and external commercial teams and supply chain.  Reporting to the Regional Director, the post holder is responsible for  sales turnover of c£20m+.

Building and managing close relationships with our customers and supply chain partners, you will have strong commercial acumen with a proven track record of delivering year on year growth and improvement in your respective field.  In addition, you will have experience in leading high performing teams, managing substantial budgets and financial controls and be able to evidence your commitment to building and maintaining leading health and safety standards.

Other elements to the role include:

  • Ensuring that Health & Safety culture and performance is a priority and that all Safety Management Systems are in place to fully comply with Group and Legislative standards

  • Formulate and manage the Garside Sands business strategy in order to grow the business and improve the financial performance.estment

  • Ensuring that CAPEX and major projects are delivered within the defined quality, time and budget parameters and to facilitate full realisations of benefits as outlined in business cases

  • Representing the business internally and externally and building strategic relationships cross-functionally and with key partners/suppliers. This will include customers, clients and representatives from Group

  • New product development and innovation in order to create added value solutions for our customers

  • Develop and identify potential successors for key roles within the team and ensuring employees receive development opportunities as appropriate

  • Foster employee engagement across the business through demonstrable felt leadership and proactive management

  • Overall responsibility for the delivery of the logistics strategy to ensure optimal utilisation of the external supply chain

  • Developing the Procurement strategy and play a lead role in the selection and determination of key partners/suppliers and subsequent management of those contracts

  • Identifying opportunities for business development through both organic growth and acquisition

  • Operate in line with Environmental, Health and Safety procedures, Quality procedures, Holcim Brand Values, Competition Law Compliance, Anti-Bribery and Corruption Directive and other business processes and procedures

What will you bring?

  • Educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline, ideally with a further supporting business qualification (e.g MBA)

  • Proven ability in developing strong and lasting customer relationships & value added solutions

  • Demonstrable track record in nurturing talent and developing future leaders within the organisation

  • Stakeholder Management at Senior Leadership Level coupled with the ability to collaborate with multi-disciplined teams across a range of functions

  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to build credibility across the Group

  • Technical understanding of product portfolio to ensure regulatory and quality compliance

  • Detail and results orientated with strong personal values to succeed

  • Highly organised with demonstrable planning and delivery capabilities
